Modified Semi-Solid Rappaport-Vassiliadis (MSRV) Agar is used with Novobiocin for the rapid detection of motile Salmonella spp. and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. MSRV was developed in 1986 by De Smedt, Bolderdijk and Rappold as a rapid means of Salmonella detection. The medium, based upon Rappaport Vassiliadis broth, is inoculated directly from the preenrichment medium, in the center of the plate. Motile organisms spread from the center in the semi-solid agar, but non-salmonellas are inhibited by the selective agents. After overnight incubation the use of polyvalent salmonella antisera or a latex kit can confirm the presence of a Salmonella. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/modified-semi-solid-rappaport-vassiliadis-agar

Tryptone No. 1 is an enzymatic digest of casein and meat for use in preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting. Tryptone No. 1 is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Tryptone No. 1 is an enzymatic digest of casein and meat used as a nitrogen source in culture media. Casein is the main protein of milk, and a rich source of amino-acid nitrogen. Tryptone No. 1 is rich in tryptophane, making it valuable for use in detecting indole production. The absence of detectable levels of carbohydrates in Tryptone makes it a suitable peptone in differentiating bacteria on the basis of their ability to ferment various carbohydrates. Several media containing Tryptone are specified in standard methods for multiple applications. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/tryptone-number-1

PALCAM Broth is used with supplements for the selective enrichment of Listeria spp. from foods and environmental samples in a laboratory setting. PALCAM Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Listeria monocytogenes, described in 1926 by Murray, Webb, and Swann, is a widespread problem in food industries. Evidence from outbreaks of listeriosis indicate the principle route of transmission is via the consumption of foodstuffs contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Implicated vehicles of transmission include turkey frankfurters, coleslaw, pasteurized milk, Mexican style cheese, and pate. PALCAM Broth is based on the formulation of Van Netten et al. while he was investigating the isolation of Listeria spp. from food samples. PALCAM Broth has been used for testing Listeria from raw milk. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/palcam-broth

Developed by Lab M (Neogen Corporation), comparisons have shown this medium to be superior to other formulations as a primary isolation medium for fastidious organisms. The peptones included have been chosen for maximum growth stimulation. Starch and sodium bicarbonate act as de-toxification agents while hemin encourages pigment production in Porphyromonas melaninogenicus. Specific growth promoting agents are Cysteine for Fusobacterium necrophorum, Propionibacterium acne and Bacteriodes fragilis, arginine for Eubacterium spp. soluble pyrophosphate for Porph. gingivalis and Porph. asaccharolyticus. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/fastidious-anaerobe-broth

Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (with Lecithin & Tween) is used for the isolation of fungi from surfaces sanitized with quaternary ammonium compounds in a laboratory setting. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (with Lecithin & Tween) is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) is a modification of Dextrose Agar described by Sabouraud. SDA is used for cultivating pathogenic and commensal fungi and yeasts. The high dextrose concentration and acidic pH of the formula permits selectivity of fungi. The addition of Lecithin and Tween to Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is used to neutralize antiseptics and disinfectants for environmental monitoring and other applications. Complete neutralization of disinfectants is important. Disinfectant carryover can cause false no-growth test results. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/sabouraud-dextrose-agar-with-lecithin-and-tween

Dermatophyte Test Medium is used for the selective isolation of dermatophytic fungi and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1969, Taplin et al. developed this medium for the isolation and recognition of dermatophytic fungi, the causative agent of ringworm from hair, nails, and skin. Dermatophyte Test Medium is preferred for isolation and early recognition of Microsporum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton genera because of a distinct color change in the medium. Rapidly-growing species may produce a complete color change in the medium in 3 days. The slower-growing species will change the indicator in longer time periods. Other organisms may grow but can be recognized as non-dermatophytes by lack of a color change. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/dermatophyte-test-medium-dtm

Bile Esculin Azide Agar is used for the selective isolation and differentiation of group D streptococci in a laboratory setting. Bile Esculin Azide Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Bile Esculin Azide Agar is a modification of the medium reported by Isenberg and Isenberg, Goldberg, and Sampson. This formula modifies Bile Esculin Agar by adding sodium azide and reducing the concentration of bile. The revised medium is more selective, but still provides rapid growth and efficient recovery of group D streptococci.Molecular taxonomic studies of the genus Streptococcus have placed enterococci, previously described group D streptococci, in the genus Enterococcus. The ability to hydrolyze esculin in the presence of bile is a characteristic of enterococci and group D streptococci. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/bile-esculin-azide-agar
